Quick answer
For the classic Kanas and Hemu winter experience, plan for late November through March. For Kashgar and the Pamir, spring and autumn generally offer more comfortable road travel. For the northern grasslands and more alpine scenery, June through September is the main window. Autumn is the best all-round season for photography and mixed routes.
| Season | Best for | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Late Nov–Mar | Altay, Kanas, Hemu snow | Coldeather days and weather-dependent road access |
| Apr–May | Kashgar, Pamir, cultural routes | Spring conditions vary from year to year |
| Jun–Aug | Grasslands and northern scenery | Popular season; book hotels early |
| Sep–Oct | Autumn colour and mixed itineraries | Strong demand around national holidays |
Winter: snow villages and blue-hour landscapes
Winter transforms the Altay region. Kanas, Hemu and Habaha become a landscape of snow-covered roofs, blue rivers and rime forest. This is the product shown on our Altay and Kanas winter tour.
Winter is not a guaranteed fixed scene. Snow, temperature, road access and optional activities all depend on the exact dates. Build flexibility into the route and confirm conditions close to departure.
Spring: Kashgar and the Pamir
From April onward, southern routes become a strong choice for travellers interested in Kashgar Old City, local markets and the highland road toward Tashkurgan. Our South Xinjiang private tour can be shortened to focus on Kashgar and the main Pamir lakes.
Summer: grasslands and long daylight
June to August is when many travellers plan broader northern itineraries. Expect popular destinations to be busier and reserve accommodation early. A private route helps you adjust the daily pace and avoid unnecessary backtracking.
Autumn: the most flexible photography season
September and October can work well for a combination of culture, mountain scenery and changing seasonal colour. Weather can shift quickly, so a local team should review road and activity conditions before your final schedule.
If your priority is Kanas snow, choose winter. For a broad route combining lakes and villages, the Twin Lakes tour is the better starting point.
How to choose your travel window
- Choose the landscape you most want to see.
- Confirm whether your group is comfortable with winter or high-altitude road travel.
- Check flight availability and allow a buffer around the main itinerary.
- Ask a local consultant to confirm current weather, roads and opening conditions before booking.
