Why combine Kashgar and the Pamir?
Kashgar is the cultural anchor of South Xinjiang. The Pamir adds a completely different scale: high passes, open plateaus, deep-blue lakes and views toward Muztagh Ata. The combination gives you both city life and mountain landscape without travelling across the entire region.
A compact 5-day framework
- Day 1: Arrive in Kashgar and explore the Old City.
- Day 2: Drive toward the Pamir via White Sand Lake and the Muztagh Ata area; stay in Tashkurgan.
- Day 3: Explore the highland surroundings, including Khunjerab and Panlong Road when accessible.
- Day 4: Return via Karakul Lake and the old city lanes of Kashgar.
- Day 5: Depart from Kashgar.
The 5-day framework is focused and has less buffer. For a more comfortable pace, choose six or seven days.
A more comfortable 8-day route
An eight-day version can add a slower Kashgar arrival, extra time around the lakes and a more flexible return. It works well for photographers and travellers who prefer fewer long driving days.
| Focus | Best duration |
|---|---|
| Kashgar plus main Pamir highlights | 5–6 days |
| Relaxed Pamir pace and photography | 7–8 days |
| Full South Xinjiang includingTaklamakan | 9–10 days |
High-altitude roads and border areas can be affected by weather, permits or temporary access changes. Confirm current conditions with the local operator.
The main places on the route
Kashgar Old City
Allow time for the alleys, markets and local food rather than treating Kashgar as only an overnight stop.
White Sand Lake and Karakul
Both are highland lake stops, but they offer different light and scenery. Keeping both gives the route more visual variety.
Tashkurgan
A useful base for the Pamir highlands. Build in a slower evening after the long road day.
Muztagh Ata
Weather and visibility determine the best viewpoint. Ask your guide to adjust based on conditions.
